Best GSM for Night Suits β€” huggler guide

What GSM Cotton Is Best for Kids' Night Suits?

In short
  • For a kid's night suit, pick a light-to-mid-weight cotton of about 120 to 180 GSM.
  • Go lighter (120–140 GSM) for hot, humid summers and heavier (180+ GSM) only for cold winter nights.
  • Higher GSM is not better for sleepwear. The knit, combed cotton and a soft finish matter just as much as the number.

For kids' night suits in India, a light-to-mid-weight cotton of about 120 to 180 GSM is the sweet spot. Higher GSM is not automatically better, because heavier fabric traps heat on warm nights.

GSM gets printed on every product page, and it can feel like a code you are meant to crack. It is simpler than that. Here is what the number means and how we actually use it for our own night suits.

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric measured over a fixed area, nothing more complicated than that.

A higher number means a thicker, heavier cloth. A lower number means a lighter, more breathable one. So a 130 GSM tee-shirt feels airy, while a 220 GSM sweatshirt feels dense and warm.

Key

GSM tells you weight, not quality. A well-made 130 GSM cotton can feel far nicer on the skin than a cheap, stiff 200 GSM one.

What GSM is best for a kid's night suit?

For everyday sleep, we stay with a light-to-mid-weight cotton in the 120 to 180 GSM band. It breathes on warm nights and still feels cosy when the weather cools down.

The right spot inside that band comes down to your city and the season. This table is the quick version we keep in our heads.

GSM range Weight & feel Best season / use
120–140 GSM Light and airy, very breathable Peak summer, hot and humid coastal cities
150–170 GSM Soft mid-weight, holds its shape All-round wear, including AC bedrooms
180+ GSM Heavier and warmer to the touch Cooler winter nights, or layering

If you remember only one thing, keep summer sleepwear light and save the heavy stuff for real winter.

Is a higher GSM better for children?

Not for sleepwear in a warm climate. Past a certain weight, the extra grams just hold heat against the skin instead of letting it out.

A night suit that is too heavy for warm nights can leave a child sweaty and restless. Lighter cotton lets body heat escape, so sleep stays calmer and there is less midnight tossing.

Watch out

Some very high GSM "winter" night suits are sold all year round. In most Indian cities they are too warm for summer, and a child will kick them off by midnight.

How does the season change the GSM you need?

Think of it in three simple zones. Lighter cotton for heat, mid-weight for most of the year, and heavier only when it is genuinely cold.

In humid cities like Chennai or Mumbai, we lean to the lighter end even in the cooler months, because damp air already makes thick fabric feel warmer. In Delhi or the hills, a heavier night suit earns its place for a few months of real winter.

Does GSM depend on your child's age and how they sleep?

A little of it does. Toddlers move a lot and overheat easily, so we keep their night suits on the lighter side, closer to 120 to 150 GSM for most of the year.

Older children can handle a touch more weight, especially in winter. If your child runs hot or the bedroom has AC on through the night, drop down a band so they do not wake up too warm.

Single jersey or interlock: which knit?

The knit matters as much as the number on the label. Single jersey is light, soft and breezy, which makes it a summer favourite for kids.

Interlock is denser and holds its shape through more washes. It suits cooler months and the night suits you want to survive a hard laundry cycle.

Note

Two fabrics at the same GSM can still feel very different. The knit, the yarn and the finish all change how the cloth sits on the skin.

What else should you check besides GSM?

GSM is one clue, not the full story. A few other things tell you how a night suit will really wear and wash over a year.

Look for combed, pre-washed cotton. Combed cotton is smoother and stronger because the short fibres are removed, so it pills less. Pre-washed fabric has already shrunk, so it holds its size after your laundry instead of turning into a crop top.

Then check the build. A tight, even weave resists thinning, and soft, flat seams will not rub a sleeping child through the night.

Tip

Rub the fabric between your fingers and hold it up to the light. Smooth, even and not see-through usually beats a bigger GSM number on the label.

For our part, we make our night suits in soft, breathable, pre-washed 100% cotton, so they stay gentle on young skin wash after wash.

FAQ

What GSM is best for kids' summer night suits?

For peak summer, aim for 120 to 140 GSM cotton. It is the lightest, most breathable band and helps a child stay cool through the heat and humidity of an Indian summer night.

Is higher GSM cotton better for children?

Not always. Higher GSM means heavier fabric, which is warmer but can trap heat against the skin. For sleepwear in most Indian cities, a light-to-mid-weight cotton is far more comfortable than a very high GSM.

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric over a set area, so a higher number is thicker and heavier, and a lower number is lighter and more breathable.

Is 100% cotton good for kids' nightwear?

Yes. 100% cotton is soft, breathable and gentle on young skin, which makes it a good choice for night suits. Our night suits use soft, breathable 100% cotton for exactly that reason.
